The American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho works with members of the Legislature – both state and federal – to advocate for legislation that would protect and strengthen our civil liberties and to oppose legislation that would threaten our civil liberties. Our legislative director lobbies the legislature, analyzes proposed legislation, drafts and presents testimony, contacts legislative offices, and stimulates grassroots contact with legislators. Among many other civil liberties issues, our legislative work includes reproductive rights, LGBT equality, immigrants’ rights, religious freedom, privacy, free speech, non-discrimination, and criminal justice.

The ACLU of Idaho is part of a larger coalition working to eliminate discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. During the 2009 legislative session, we drafted legislation that would amend Title 67 of the Idaho Human Rights Act, so that sexual orientation and gender identity would be protected in areas of employment, housing, education, and public accomodations. Unfortunately, the Senate State Affairs Committee voted against printing the amendment. To learn more about this coalition and how to become active, check out http://www.idahoansforfairness.org
During the Legislative sessions, we will send you e-mail updates on our priority issues and action items. You will also receive our monthly e-newsletter, which includes ACLU events, what we're working on, and various educational pieces.
