After George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Tony McDade were killed at the hands of police, protests erupted across the nation. The collective uprisings in support of Black lives resulted in a wave of removals of confederate monuments that were erected during the Jim Crow era. While states throughout the country continue to empower localities to remove statues that glorify and memorialize white supremacy, this legislation would unfortunately do the exact opposite, and instead require localities to obtain approval from the Idaho state legislature in order to lawfully remove statues or rename public schools or streets named after historical figures or events.
