BOISE, ID—The ACLU of Idaho will host a reception and awards ceremony to announce the winners in its 1st Annual, statewide, Youth Scholarship Contest for high school students. The reception will take place this Wednesday, April 10 at 7:00 pm at the Crux Coffee Shop located at 1022 W. Main Street in downtown Boise. The reception is free and open to the general public.

This year’s theme for the scholarship contest is “Make Your Rights a Reality”. Students submitting entries were asked to creatively demonstrate how the U.S. Constitution, and more specifically, the Bill of Rights is reflected in their life. Contestants submitted their entries through a variety of artistic methods including drawing, painting, photography, and mixed materials composition.
As an organization dedicated to protecting the First Amendment and American’s right to freedom of expression, the ACLU has a strong history of defending artists and their creative abilities to portray and discuss hot button civil liberties issues through their works of art.
“As a free society, it is imperative that we strive to protect the principle that each and every individual has the right to decide what art he or she wants, or does not want, to create,” Said Kathy Griesmyer, Project Director. “Freedom of expression is the very heart of our democracy and must be upheld as a cornerstone of our society.”
In total, the ACLU of Idaho received over 35 entries from high schools across the state. The entries submitted in the contest displayed a high level of artistic talent, ability, creativity, and commitment to civil liberties.  During the reception, the entries will be on display for the public to view and appreciate. Our judges panel of local journalists and art professionals will also be on hand to reveal the winners of the scholarship prizes.
