SB 1049 is simply an unnecessary piece of legislation. The updated definition for so-called “partial-birth” abortion duplicates existing federal law under which Idaho already operates. In addition, the term “partial-birth” abortion is neither a valid medical term, nor is it a recognized practice by the larger medical community. Instead, this definition change uses inflammatory and insulting language, just to score political points rather than respecting a woman’s decision regarding the private circumstances of her individual pregnancy.
